2004, 115 x 74 cm, Acrylic on canvas

I love this painting. From my European (non-Brazilian) point of view, it’s so totally gay – the pink, the clothes, flowers and lips – yet monumental, castle-like and impregnably self-protective. So often, Antonino’s characters stand alone, facing the world, bayonet ready, beauty ridiculed. Here, the boy – child Adonis, wingless Icarus or Narcissus of the painter’s eye – stands high upon a mythical cloud, aboard a carpenter’s sun with rays emanating from the symbolic brush of his creator. Antonino is God, Dali is his prophet, and his art the savior.
