São João na Roça

2005, 167 x 146 cm, Acrylic on canvas

During the summer solstice in Europe (June), the Greeks and Romans paid homage to the gods of harvest with fires, singing and dancing. Roman legionaries spread the festivals to Portugal. Celebrated in Brazil since the sixteenth century, the June festivals have been adapted to new, local customs, alcohol, cachaça, being one of the main ingredients, with music, local food and lots of fireworks.
